The nature of our work is to be there for an individual or family when something goes wrong. We at GSM get all sorts of different situations, be it a working single mother whose car is in dire need of repairs or a family saddled with debt due to unexpected medical bills. All the situations have one thing in common; the unexpected happens and the person is out of places to turn. Hearing these situations day after day one may expect it to be depressing, but surprisingly it is not for two reasons:
First, we are in a position to help better the situation
Second, there is a resiliency and a grace in the human spirit that is shown more clearly when one is facing tragedy.
I have met and talked with people who have had the unthinkable happen to them, such as the death of their child, and have been astounded with their strength and ability to not only survive but to thrive in spite of this heartbreak. That is not to suggest these events didn’t mean anything to them or that they put on some superficial appearance of happiness, but instead that facing a misfortune brings growth. Clients have related to me some positive effects of their trials such as learning what is important in life and growing closer to their loved ones.
The fact that Good Samaritan has the capabilities to help them along, at least materially, through this process fills me with gratitude and joy. So many clients have thanked us and let us know what a blessing we’ve been in their life but it is a two-way street, for the blessing they give us is learning to rely on each other and face tragedy with grace.
Thank you for your support, it is because of you our most vulnerable community members get the help they need!
