This past month of July 2018 brought endings and new beginnings. We were saddened to see the passing of Archbishop Raymond Hunthausen, one of the namesakes and inspirations for our new Hunthausen fund for the homeless at Good Samaritan Ministries. Coincidentally this month marked the official opening of the fund. Applications were accepting the beginning of July , amidst this great sadness this fund brings hope.
New hope, and a new beginning for families, families like “Laura” and “Joe”. This young couple found themselves in a desperate situation and turned to the Hunthausen Fund for help. Both working parents of a newborn baby, they were renting and making ends meet. However the place they were renting proved to be unsuitable to live. There were unsafe conditions affecting their baby health issues. After countless unsuccessful talks and appeals to their landlord to fix the problem, they realized for their health and well-being they needed to move. They found a new, apartment to rent, but didn’t know how they could come up with the money to initially afford it. Those living like "Laura" and "Joe" usually fall through the cracks, because they make just enough not to qualify for federal housing assistance. But living paycheck to paycheck, the difficulty is saving enough up front money for moving costs. Security deposits and first month’s rent can be well over $1000. The Hunthausen Fund was able to put Laura and Joe in a new place by assisting them with the tremendous upfront costs of moving into a new apartment. With this boost, they are able to continue working and afford the monthly rent. They can now focus on their family, making sure their daughter is safe and healthy. Their family’s future is one of hope-A happy new beginning in a healthy, safe home thanks to the Hunthausen fund and thanks to you. Thank you for donating to the Hunthausen Fund, especially for giving a gift in memory of the Archbishop. His legacy and memory lives on in the people his fund serves. |
